Project origin
Following the completion of a similar project at the neighbouring address we were commissioned to extend the lower ground floor of this existing Victorian terraced house to create a new garden room.

Brief
The project responded to several key client ambitions – an aim to create generous living space adjacent to their existing kitchen and dining areas, desire to improve the connection between these spaces and the garden and an overall aspiration for a lighter, more contemporary feel for this part of the house.

Design
The extension partially projects beyond the original line of the rear of the house to create a west facing side window which captures afternoon and evening sun. To blur the boundary between interior and exterior a small terracotta tiled ‘garden room’ is created in this projecting corner.

Materials and process
The project employs simple industrial materials – exposed polished concrete and plywood, together with vivid green window frames and structural steel elements. The decision to expose and colour the structure developed from discussions about creating an overall lightness, bringing colour and life to the project and making a visual link to the garden beyond.

Inspiration
Colour references including the work of Anni Albers were discussed with the client, who is also a weaver, and from these conversations the palette of green and terracotta was developed.
